Nearly 1,300 people practised together on the banks of the Huangpu River. Then, as night fell, lululemon projected the words breathe, stretch, and flow across the city's most iconic landmarks, turning a wellness event into something the whole of Shanghai could feel.

Beyond the Event: Owning the Backdrop

There is a meaningful difference between hosting an event in a city and turning the city itself into the event. lululemon's activation along Shanghai's North Bund belongs firmly to the second category. Nearly 1,300 participants gathered along the Huangpu River for a full day of communal yoga practice, but the activation didn't end at the edge of the festival grounds, as night fell, a large-scale light show projected the words "breathe," "stretch," and "flow" across some of the city's most recognisable landmarks, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, with lululemon becoming the first brand to present a holographic projection at the Grand Halls.

This is the crucial design decision that elevates the activation from "brand event" to "cultural moment": the experience was never contained to those who showed up with a mat. Anyone in Shanghai that evening, whether they knew it or not, became part of lululemon's brand story simply by looking at the skyline.
