Plenty of brands sponsor major sporting events. Far fewer transform an entire public square into a physical extension of that sponsorship, one where the spirit of Wimbledon exists independent of a match ticket.

The Difference Between Sponsoring and Inhabiting
Plenty of brands sponsor major sporting events. Far fewer transform an entire public square into a physical extension of that sponsorship. Ralph Lauren's takeover of Sloane Square does exactly that, and the distinction matters enormously. Returning as Official Outfitter of The Championships, a title the brand has uniquely held since 2006, making it the first and only designer in Wimbledon's 149-year history to carry that role, Ralph Lauren isn't simply putting its name on signage near the tournament.
It is building a parallel, fully realised destination several miles from the grounds, one where the spirit of Wimbledon exists independent of a match ticket. This is the difference between sponsoring an event and inhabiting its cultural footprint: anyone can buy advertising space at a tournament; building a destination people choose to visit on its own merits is an entirely different achievement.
