Most beauty brands still lead with the product. Chanel led with a question: what does your voice sound like in colour? Radio Shine FM, the brand's pink-neon "radio station" pop-up at Beijing's Sanlitun Taikoo Li, turns the launch of the new Coco Shine Lip Gloss collection into something closer to a personality test than a product demo, and in doing so, quietly reframes what a beauty activation is actually for.

The mechanics are almost deceptively simple. A retro microphone analyses your voice and prints a card matching you to a "natural" shade. A constellation draw hands you a "lucky" one. A wall of avant-garde sunglasses nudges you toward a "bold" choice you might not have picked yourself. None of the technology here is new, voice analysis, gamified quizzes, and personalised recommendation engines exist across a dozen other categories.
